Genre Study

Our chosen genre for our film is the psychological thriller (a thriller that emphasizes the psychology of its characters and their unstable emotional states). We wanted to create film incorporating the themes of murder and serial killing in its plot; however the cross-flow between the different genres provided us with difficulty in localising only one genre. As a result, our film intends to incorporate technical codes and conventions borrowed from the crime thriller and mystery sub-genres, as well as psychological thrillers. They demonstrate how the elements of suspense, tension, and excitement are used in media to stimulate the viewer's moods, giving them a heightened level of anticipation, expectation, uncertainty, shock, anxiety or terror.

Initially, our team simply wanted to create a horror film as it appeared to be the most exciting, straight-forward option. Upon further development of our plot we decided to produce a psychological horror/thriller instead - focusing on psychological torment and ideas of kidnapping, killing or torture - so we did a study into that genre.
